ALPINE AND THE RING

The twisty Nürburgring is a demanding circuit for drivers, cars and tyres alike. Thanks to their nimble handling, Alpines have frequently gone well there over the years. In 1963, José Rosinski and Lloyd Casner won the Nürburgring 1,000km in an M63, while Lucien and Mauro Bianchi came first in the 1965 Nürburgring 500km.g.

In 1971, Jean-Luc Thérier, Jacques Henry and Maurice Nusbaumer rose to the crazy challenge of the Nürburgring 96 Hours in which the resourceful Frenchmen
claimed a surprise victory in their A110 1600S Berlinette..

Once again, Philippe Sinault expected both crews to finish in the points.

READY TO RACE

Gustavo Menezes could barely conceal his desire to get back behind the wheel of the ‘Beast’, the nickname he has given to the Alpine A460 that he and his team-mates have already steered to class wins at Spa and Le Mans, as well as to the provisional LMP2 championship lead. Meanwhile, René Rast, the category’s only German driver, was keen to win on home soil for second-placed G-Drive Racing, setting the scene for another exciting afternoon

At 1pm, the 60,000 spectators watched as the 33 cars – including 11 LMP2 prototypes – roared over the start-line in glorious sunshine. By the end of the first hour, the
N°36 Alpine was running second, just behind the G-Drive Racing car, while the N°35 crew was doing its best to make up ground around the narrow track. The fact that prototypes and GTs lap together in world endurance racing does not facilitate overtaking. As Alpine’s main rivals hit mechanical trouble or pitted, Gustavo Menezes snapped up the opportunity to ease into the lead.e.

With five minutes remaining, you could feel the tension and concentration in the Alpine garage. Despite pressure from Bruno Senna in the RGR Sport by Morand Ligier JS P2, Lapierre kept his focus in the N°36 A460. His incisive driving style through the tight turns occasionally led him off the line, for which he was given a warning, but he went on to earn another assertive victory for Alpine and conclude the European phase of the 2016 FIA WEC with a 112-point lead in the LMP2 Teams’ standings. The Baxi DC Racing Alpine trio (N°35) came a fine seventh.

Alpine is now looking to conquer the world as the FIA WEC heads for Mexico, the USA, China, Japan and Bahrain.

THE CIRCUIT

The Nürburgring is located in southwest Germany’s Eifel Mountains and was inaugurated in 1927. The main complex is overlooked by a medieval castle and the venue features a choice of layouts, including the infamous 28km Nordschleife reputed for its blind corners, steep climbs and giddy descents which have earned it the nickname ‘Green Hell’.
The 5.148km loop opened in the 1980s is shorter and safer but just as selective. It was this variant that hosted the 6 Hours of Nürburgring in July.g.
